         A lot of people think that being smart means getting good grades and having that degree. However, to be smart is to be able to think critically and make decisions that benefit you. It's not just about memorizing information or being able to recite facts; it's about understanding how the world works and using that knowledge to your advantage. 

You don't have to be a genius or spend hours in the library to get smarter! Regardless of your age or level of education, you can become smarter by following some simple habits. Here are some of our favorites:

Number 1 - Don't Just Assume;

         This is a habit that applies to every aspect of your life from the way you take in new information to how you approach interpersonal relationships. Many people tend to take things at face value. They don’t question things; they just assume that if something is presented as fact in the media or by a source they trust, then it must be true. Unfortunately, this can lead to bad decision-making because you can miss out on information that could help make better choices. Don't just assume that something is true because someone told you so. Always clarify and look at all sides of everything before making up your mind.

Number 2 - Read Something You Normally Wouldn't;

           Reading is a great way to expand your knowledge (and your vocabulary), and if you want to be smarter, you should definitely read every day. You should also consider reading something that you normally wouldn't even if it directly opposes your own perspective! Whether it's an article or book, reading something that differs from what you would normally read can potentially be an eye-opening experience as you will likely be forced to consider another point of view. It can certainly help expand your mind and challenge some of your ideas!

Number 3 - Diversify Your Day;

           While a routine can be great and beneficial, it's easy to get stuck in a rut. To be both happy and productive, you need to mix things up - so that you are constantly doing new things and keeping your brain active. Get yourself off of autopilot. Take a different route home from work, try a new recipe for dinner, or go for a walk outside instead of walking on a treadmill. Inviting a little novelty into your daily life will not only help keep things fresh and interesting, but it can actually help make you smarter and more creative!

Number 4 - Expose Yourself to Different World Views;

           Smart people are curious. They interact with different people, and expose themselves to as many cultures, places, and perspectives as possible. It's a great way to get your mind working. Of course, it's also important that you are open-minded about the information you receive from these sources. You may not agree with everything you hear and see, but if you keep an open mind, it will help broaden your understanding of the world around you.

Number 5 - Make A Point of Learning Something New Each Day;

            Learning something new every day (no matter how small or seemingly insignificant), can have a big impact on your brain. Watch educational shows, listen to audiobooks or podcasts, or subscribe to thought-provoking newsletters. You can even use a word-of-the-day app and have fun learning new words.

Number 6 - Apply New Knowledge;

        When you learn something new, don't let it go to waste. If you don't apply what you've learned, then what's the point? Don't just learn for the sake of learning; make sure it betters your life somehow! Whether it's learning about nutrition or technology, if you take the time to learn something, put that knowledge into practice.

Number 7 - Think of New Ways to Do Old Things

         Another way you can challenge your brain is to look at things you do every day - and think about how you could do them slightly differently. Finding new ways to do things will fend off boredom and help your brain stay sharp and focused, as well as make life more interesting and fun. You could also use this habit to find better, more efficient ways of doing something you do often, such as packing lunches or folding clothes.

Number 8 - Play Games That Make You Think

           To keep your brain sharp and engaged, do something that requires you to think. Board games, card games, video games, and puzzles are all good options. As a matter of fact, studies show that playing strategy-based games helps improve memory function. That’s because they require you to think on the spot. And by giving your brain practice with this type of thinking process over time, you also improve your ability to deal with different scenarios in everyday life.

Number 9 - Increase Mental Intensity;

        The more you challenge yourself, the smarter you become. The key to doing this is to push yourself beyond what you think are your limits. Try picking up a new skill or studying a subject that you're unfamiliar with for at least 30 minutes a day. You could also try entertaining a different thought pattern by reading self-help books or listening to podcasts about personal development. By doing these things on a regular basis, you will continue building neural pathways in your brain, which will ultimately increase your capacity for learning.

Number 10 - Take Up A Productive Hobby;

           It's important to have interests outside of work, even if you're a busy professional. Hobbies are more than merely a way to fill your free time; they're creative outlets that keep your brain engaged and they can even improve cognitive function. Whether it's writing, playing a musical instrument, painting, knitting, woodworking, or gardening, hobbies are essential for your mental health and can help you learn skills that will make you a more well-rounded person. They can also serve as a great way to meet people with similar interests, which can be helpful if you're looking to make new friends.

Number 11 - Hang Out with People Who Are Smarter Than You;

             This is a big one! It's easy to surround yourself with those that agree with your views or offer the same level of intelligence as yours But if you want your brain to evolve into something greater and more complex, you need to learn from those who can teach you new things or show you another way of looking at an issue. When you surround yourself with people who are smarter than you, they'll challenge and inspire you. They will make you think critically about your own beliefs and actions, which can help you become more effective.

Number 12 - Get Some Physical Exercise;

           You already know that exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body and brain, which is why it's so important to make physical activity a habit in your life. In addition to helping improve your overall health and well-being, exercise helps improve blood flow to the brain. Consistent exercise also produces BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which helps with memory, learning, focus, concentration, and comprehension. As an added bonus, it also promotes better sleep!

Number 13 - Set Aside Some Quiet Time;

            If you want to be smarter, it's important to take time to reflect on your days. Smart people learn from their experiences so they don't make the same mistakes again and again. And by reflecting on your days, you can also start seeing patterns that might contribute to unhealthy habits or behaviors. This will help you become more self-aware and mindful of the way you think, act, and live So, there you have it. If you want to get smarter, try adding these habits into your life. If you already do some of these things, keep up the good work! And remember: It's not about being perfect all the time, it's about making progress. Don't be too hard on yourself if something doesn't work out the way you'd hoped. Just keep learning and moving forward.

Three Laughing Monks (Motivational Story)

 

 

        Old monks their names are not remembered today simply because they never revealed them to anybody in china, they are simply known as the three laughing monks.

They always travel together and did nothing else but laugh they entered a village or a town stood in the center of its main square and started laughing slowly but surely the people who lived and worked there and the passersby couldn't resist and had to start laughing as well until a small laughing crowd had formed and eventually the laughing had spread to the whole village or town that was the moment when the three old monks moved on to the next village their laughter was their only prayer all of their teaching because they never spoke to anybody they just created that situation all over china. 

They were loved and respected the people had never known such spiritual teachers before or after they seemed to communicate that life should be taken only as a great opportunity to laugh as if they had discovered some kind of cosmic jokes they traveled and laughed for many years spreading joy and happiness throughout china until one day while being at a particular village in the north province, one of them died the people were shocked and came running from afar leaving  the fields unattended for the day only to witness the other two monks reaction to this dramatic event, they were expecting them to show sorrow or even cry and the whole village came to the place, where the three monks were two alive and one dead but the two remaining monks were laughing only harder, they were laughing and laughing and could not seem to stop so that a few of the good people who were assisting to this scene in this belief approached them and asked them why they weren't mourning at all for their deceased friend and for one time the monks actually responded because yesterday on our way to your village, he proposed the bet on who of us would beat the other two and die first and now he won the old rogue, he even had a testament prepared the tradition required to wash the dead and change his clothes before putting him on the funeral pyre but the old monk had explicitly asked to leave the old clothes on him since he had never been filthy for one day I never allowed any of the filth of this world to reach me through my laughter his testament stated so the old man's body was placed on the pyre with the garments, he was wearing when he had arrived and as the fire was lit and started licking on his clothes to everyone's astonishment suddenly fireworks of a hundred colors went exploding up and down and to all directions and finally the people who had gathered there also joined the laughter of the two wise men

you see in life in your life maybe the only reason that we are here on this earth is so we can laugh and laugh and never stop experiencing joy and laughter so next time you face a problem look in the mirror and just laugh the problem away because your joy is what makes you alive

Now some of these tips you might have heard of before, some of them though, are going to be completely new. At least I hope so.

So, let's dive in.

When I was studying nutrition, this was one of the most common tips that we were taught to share with our clients and it's that you eat what you see. Now this works equally well for people who want to gain weight, who want to lose weight or for people who are just looking to make more wholesome food choices. For example, if you want to eat more fruits, keep it on the counter in clear sight and instead of just throwing an orange into your bag, which let's be honest, hardly ever finds its way out, we can instead peel it up or cut it, put it in a container and put it on our desk to enjoy when hungry. And if we cut them up and put them in front of our partner or kids it'll also increase the chance that they'll eat it too.

If you usually place a bowl of chips on your desk, maybe swapping it out for something like nuts might help. And when you open your pantry and chocolate is the first thing you see, chances are that's what you're gonna reach for. So, maybe try shifting it to the side or behind some of the dried fruit or trail mix. This isn't to say that that food is forbidden,

it just means we're less likely to impulsively reach for it if it's out of sight. And the same thing goes for drinking our fluids, whether it's tea or water, placing it in front of you while you work or study. It's gonna increase the chances that you'll take periodic sips and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Carrots and celery are awesome carrying devices for our favorite dips and sauces, but if you've ever tried to cut them up ahead of time to store in the fridge, you might have noticed that they lose their crunch and sometimes they get this slimy film. So, there is a way to avoid that and it's just to store them in a glass container or jar with some water. It helps the veggies stay crisp and fresh and they store in the fridge for a longer time. Just change out the water every couple of days or so, and keep in mind that the carrots will keep longer than the celery.

Now I know some people might be worried about cutting up their veggies ahead of time because you feel you might lose some nutrients. Now there are three factors that can cause nutrient loss and that is heat, oxygen and light.

In this case there's no exposure to heat or light, just oxygen and the nutrient that's most easily affected by this is vitamin C and sometimes vitamin E, but what you don't lose are all the other incredible nutrients like fiber, some of the B vitamins, minerals and many more. So long story short, the benefit of eating pre-cut veggies, even with a little less vitamin C, it far outweighs not eating the veggies at all or reaching for less wholesome convenient foods instead.

This next one is a tip that my mum actually recently taught me. I go through a lot of nut butters.

Peanut butter and almond butter especially, and as nutrient-dense as they already are there's something we can actually do to pump up the nutrition a little bit more. And how we can do that is with seeds.

Seeds offer a unique combination of phytonutrients and antioxidants that have a whole bunch of health benefits. So I take a full jar of peanut butter, I empty out about a third of it.

I store that away to enjoy later. And to the large jar I add a couple spoonful’s of some seeds. You can use whatever you have on hand.

I use sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, coarsely ground flax seeds, chia seeds, lightly toasted sesame seeds, and pumpkin seeds. I then give it a mix and store it in the fridge. You can add it to oatmeal or spread it on toast. It just makes for a colorful and nutrient-packed addition to any meal. And if you can't tolerate nut butters you can still make the seed mix alone and use it in the same way, like add it to smoothies or parfaits.

I feel like it also makes the foods just look so much more vibrant and wholesome. You might have heard of this little hack to fill a few Tupperware containers with the ingredients you need for a smoothie. That way when you're looking for a morning or afternoon pick-me-up you just pop it into a blender, no chopping required, add a splash of plant milk or maybe some greens or nut butter to accompany it.

It's also an awesome way to use up leftover fruits that are at their peak ripeness. But if you already make smoothies you might find that you've kind of gotten into this routine of making the same thing over and over again. At least I know that that happens to me. So I have two ingredients that I want to recommend.

These are nutrient-dense additions to your frosty drink and trust me, you can't even taste them in there.

First up is frozen zucchini. And this is especially great for people who can't tolerate bananas or just don't like the taste of it. Because it gives it a similar creaminess but without that banana flavor. And the second one is white beans. These are packed in protein, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants and again trust me, you won't even know that they're in there! So if you're looking for a new twist to your smoothies give these two a try.

You know how they say an apple a day keeps the doctor away? It's more like something that berries are capable of doing. An apple, for example, has 60 units of antioxidants, whereas a cup of berries offers 650 units. And that's why Zain and I try to have at least a handful of berries each day. Either on our oatmeal, on a parfait and smoothies or just as a snack. So this little tip is just a reminder to up that berry intake if you can. And I know that berries can be expensive when they're not in season so in the colder months we opt for frozen berries and you know that frozen berries in many cases are more nutrient-dense than fresh berries.

But another side kind of tip is: if you are lucky enough to have access to berry picking in the summer months wherever you live, load up on that stuff, cut it up and put it in the freezer to enjoy in the fall and winter months.

Now we've talked about the nutrient density of spices and many spices come from fresh herbs. You've likely noticed we use a lot of fresh herbs in our recipes. And as much as I've gotten better at keeping my potted herbs alive, sometimes they just die for certain dried out ones like rosemary and thyme you can just pick off the branches and use as a spice but you can also salvage some of the living leaves by picking them off the plant chopping them up and then placing them in an ice cube tray with some water alternatively you can also add them to a food processor with equal parts oil and water blend it and then add that to the ice cube tray once it's frozen I then transfer the cubes into a Tupperware container now the herbs they're not going to freeze in a way that's going to retain its former glories but it's going to retain its flavor and nutrient profile if you enjoy it with a 1 to 2 month period you can then add these cubes to soups or stews or pasta sauces it's a great way to reduce food waste and add some flavor to dishes plus some extra vitamins minerals and antioxidants something I've noticed I've been doing lately which I never used to do before is adding spinach to my cooked meals and I do it in super huge quantities because within just a few minutes the big pile of greens cooks down to a super small amount and it hides perfectly well in dishes like curries stir fries its soups and more as with other veggies.

There are pros and cons to both the raw and cooked form with spinach for example the raw form offers higher amounts of certain nutrients whereas the cooked form offers higher amounts of other nutrients so longer the short enjoy both the cooked and raw versions but don't shy away from cooked it's just such an easy way to get a whole bunch of greens onto your plate and into your body with loads of nutrients to accompany it we've all been there feeling like you're hungry for no reason but you just want something to snack on or maybe you're legitimately hungry but you don't have the energy or patience to figure out what you want to make so if there's one tip I can give it is to have 3 snack ideas in your arsenal that take 2 minutes or less to put together that way they serve as alternatives to something that might have been a little less wholesome so for example my three quick and dirty snacks or medjool dates filled with nut butter an apple that i dip into plant yogurt and sometimes I put into the cinnamon or maple syrup and some hummus on crackers or rice cakes topped with cucumbers tomatoes and arugula having an arsenal of crazy easy wholesome snacks it's not only going to limit decision fatigue around snack choices it's also going to give you a nutrient-dense energy boost.

There is no doubt about it planning our meals helps us make more wholesome food choices and it helps to decrease the food waste and it's 100% natural to not be able to stick to it 100% of the time but if we plan our meals like a week in advance chances are more often than not that we do stick to its some of the time
